Sustainability is the development that satisfies the needs of the present without compromising the capacity of future generations, guaranteeing the balance between economic growth, care for the environment and social well-being. At its core, it is about finding a balance between three dimensions: society, environment and economy. Any of the challenges facing humankind, such as climate change, water scarcity, inequality and hunger, can only be resolved at a global level and by promoting sustainable development: a commitment to social progress, environmental balance and economic growth.

Skillman’s mandate is in line with these principles and it endorses the UN sustainable development Goals, a call to action to protect the planet and guarantee the global well-being of people.

One of our top members, Richard Pagett, Professor at European Center for Peace and Development, shared with us in a series of exclusive interviews, the importance of sustainable development and sustainable production in our societies, emphasizing how sustainability is more than just seeking a compromise between the natural environment and the pursuit of economic growth. What are the challenges for TVET providers on this regard? Are there any examples of excellence in the world of today? His answer is “Not yet”.

The problem: currently, we are far off track. The centrepiece of the story is economic growth. We are living in a world now with unprecedented material wealth. The work on sustainable development requires continuous exploration and jumping into deep waters. Our task is to collectively find new ways of organising our economies and societies, which requires the active involvement of individuals, businesses, administrations and countries around the world.
